Coronavirus: More than 600 people die in 24 hours as latest figures on confirmed cases in Bristol area released

The number of people who have died in hospital in the UK after contracting coronavirus has risen by more than 600 in 24 hours - as another new case is confirmed in Bristol.

A total of 47,806 people have now tested positive for the virus in the UK, latest figures published by the Department of Health on Saturday afternoon show, and 4,934 of those hospitalised have died.

The number of deaths has risen by 621 from Saturday's figure of 4,313, with the number of confirmed cases increasing by 5,903 from 41,903.

The number of people who have died with coronavirus at hospitals in the Bristol area has risen to 40 - with 10 deaths reported at one hospital trust across three days.

North Bristol NHS Trust, which runs Southmead Hospital, reported the 10 deaths for Wednesday to Friday (April 1 to 3), according to latest figures from NHS England.

The latest figures comes as the number of coronavirus cases in Bristol rose by one in 24 hours to 167.

South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset haven't seen any new cases confirmed in the latest figures.

Yesterday afternoon it emerged that the owner of Longleat Safari Park, Lord Bath, died on Saturday, April 4 at the Royal United Hospital in Bath after being admitted to hospital with coronavirus.

The figures on death tolls only include those who had a positive coronavirus test, and those who died in hospital - and the real figure is likely to be higher, as explained here.

Police have been patrolling parks and the city council has urged people to keep their social distances in parks.
