Coronavirus: Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis hits back after being accused of spreading panic

Financial guru Martin Lewis has defended himself after he was accused of spreading panic over coronavirus.

The Money Saving Expert creator created a Twitter poll asking followers whether they had stockpiled two weeks of food because of the virus, Plymouth Herald reports .

The results of the polll show 87% of those who took part, out of 42,379 votes, said it had "not even crossed their minds".

Other options included "Didn't need, got enuff", "Yes, bough 2wks worth" and "Yes more than 2wks worth".

Defending himself, while quoting a tweet criticising him, Martin Lewis said:  "To you and others saying similar. I understand your point but this is a poll testing attitudes.

For news tailored to your local area:

"The papers have been covering stories of people stocking up for days. This isn't a new concept. I'm testing to see how widespread an action it is."

And many of Martin's followers had his back.

Damien Hellewell tweeted: "The government have been saying they might have to close cities down but it's a Martin Lewis poll that's going to cause a panic? Right."

And another user said: "I think it's an interesting poll and if you think it's going to start mass panic, then you're obviously not looking what the current government is doing or you'd already be apoplectic."
