Coronavirus: Mayo Ladies boss and cancer survivor Peter Leahy throws support behind sport shut-down

Mayo Ladies football manager Peter Leahy backed the suspension of Irish sport as the country looks to slow the spread of Covid-19.

The GAA are among a number of sporting bodies that have suspended matches and training sessions until March 29.

Leahy - who battled thyroid cancer in 2005 - took to social media to throw his support behind the current measures.

He tweeted: "As a full Time Sports coach this is a disaster but as a oncology patient with low white blood cells all this isolation and closures is to help people like me.

"It's OK to laugh that it's only a flu but not alright for people who can't fight the infection. Thanks #togetherstronger "

Twitter users agreed with Leahy's message, describing the Mayo boss as a 'great inspiration'.

The GAA announced postponement of all activities on Thursday following Taoiseach Leo Varadkar's historic address to the nation from Washington DC that morning.

GAA president John Horan urged that brighter days lie ahead, but a lifting of the suspension looks highly unlikely any time soon.

Horan said: “We will get back to playing games, it’s just a matter of time and a matter of people being patient."

Munster rugby ace Keith Earls - who has a young daughter with a serious medical condition - admits he is worried how some people in Ireland are reacting to the spread of the virus.

Earls tweeted: "As a father of a child with a serious respiratory lung condition and many others like her, I urge the public to please listen to the professionals.

"I will do everything I can to protect her. Everyone has a part to play. I'm usually a private person but the actions of some people are really starting to worry me.

"This is an extremely worrying and scary time and we all need to take immediate action. Please."
