Exercise could be banned because of coronavirus rulebreakers, Matt Hancock warns

Lockdown exercise could be banned because of coronavirus rebels breaking the rules, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has warned.

The Cabinet Minister threatened to stop people going out for a walk as he blasted people for sunbathing on the warmest weekend of the year so far.

Councils have been forced to shut parks after Britons exploited the fine weather to hit hotspots as the mercury rose to 21C.

Police patrolled beaches and tourist resorts in an effort to clampdown on those flouting the regulations.

Mr Hancock told Sky News: “Sunbathing is against the rules that have been set out for important public health reasons.”

Speaking to the BBC, he added: “If you don't want us to have to take the step to ban exercise of all forms outside your own home then you have to follow the rules. Let's not have a minority spoiling it for everybody.”

Lambeth Council closed Brockwell Park in South London after 3,000 sun seekers descended.

Newly-elected Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has said Labour will back the Government if ministers toughen the coronavirus lockdown measures.

He told BBC One's The Andrew Marr Show he would engage constructively with the Conservatives and vowed to not seek to score party political points - nor demand the impossible - during the crisis.

Asked if he would support further restrictions on exercise if people flout the rules, Sir Keir said: "Yes we would - we do have to take whatever steps are necessary, and social distancing, staying indoors is really difficult for people, it's particularly difficult if you don't have a garden, if you're in a flat; and I know there are many people in overcrowded accommodation.

"But we've got to get through this and every time people break the guidance from the Government they put other people at risk.
