Coronavirus map shows worst outbreak outside London in mainland UK is in Wales

The UK's most significant coronavirus hotspot outside of London is in Wales, local health data reveals.

A newly created heat map at covid-live.co.uk, which pulls in live data from UK government bodies, has revealed that outside of London in the mainland UK, the highest concentration of confirmed coronavirus cases per 100,000 people is in south Wales within the boundaries of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen.

The Shetland islands have the highest concentration of cases to people, however the actual number of cases is small at 24.

In the area covered by the Aneurin Bevan university health board, 309 people have tested positive for the virus, compared to more than 2,400 people in Greater London.

As most testing is currently being done in hospitals, the true number of people with Covid-19 is likely to be proportionally higher.

Public Health Wales has not yet released the details of health boards where all of the people who have died after contracting Covid-19 were being treated. But as of Sunday, five people had died at the Royal Gwent Hospital Newport and one at Nevill Hall hospital in Abergavenny.

A further five deaths were confirmed on Wednesday (March 25).

In total , 22 people have lost their lives after contracting coronavirus in Wales.

Cases of the virus continue to multiply in Wales, with the country now reporting 628 confirmed cases.

Across the UK, there have been more than 8,000 confirmed cases and over 420 deaths.

Though the number of infections continues to rise, those who suspect they have the virus are no longer being asked to contact 111.

Dr Giri Shankar, incident director for the Covid-19 outbreak response at Public Health Wales (PHW): “Anyone with a suspected coronavirus illness should not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.

"They should only contact NHS 111 if they feel they cannot cope with their symptoms at home, their condition gets worse, or their symptoms do not get better after seven days."

He added: “The public play a very important role in slowing the spread of infection. By following the latest advice, you will protect yourself, protect the most vulnerable and help to reduce the pressure on NHS Wales and minimise the impact of the virus.”

On Monday night (March 23), the Prime Minister announced strict new measures to stop the spread of the virus.

Boris Johnson: British public must stay at home

Putting the whole of the UK on lockdown, he said people may only leave home to exercise once per day, to attend work where "absolutely necessary", to shop for essential items such as food, and for necessary medical needs.

Meanwhile, non-essential shops have been shuttered under the new restrictions and public gatherings of more than two people who do not live together have been banned.

Police have been given the ability to break up large gatherings and fine those who do not adhere to the new measures.
