Coronavirus: Man lives off restaurant stock for two weeks in empty shopping centre

A brazen man spent two weeks living off food from restaurants closed due to coronavirus fears.

CCTV footage caught the Chinese man - identified only as Mr Wu - as he ate and drank in an abandoned shopping centre in the city of Tongling in Anhui Province, east China.

He was only caught when restaurant staff returned and reported stock was missing from their kitchen.

Mr Wu helped himself to food and drink roughly worth a total of £220 (2,000 RMB) during the lockdown.

Police say he sneaked into the empty building after it was ordered to close for a fortnight, along with other potential hotspots, to stop the spread of the deadly virus.

With no staff present, he was able to live off what had been left behind.

Videos show Mr Wu - who told police the outbreak of COVID-19 means he hasn't been able to make a living - rummaging through drawers and helping himself to items.

One restaurant's CCTV camera even caught him in their kitchen cooking himself an egg.

It is not clear if Mr Wu will be punished for his two-week stay (AsiaWire)

The man was arrested, although it is not yet known if he will be punished for his two-week stay.

Fang Xin, one of the officers involved in the arrest, said: "Because of the outbreak, all commercial venues are shut.

"Food and drink were often left inside restaurants, which no longer had any staff to maintain them.

"He stayed there for about half a month, going from shop to shop, and finding different things to eat or cook for himself.

"He would then find a corner to sleep in.

"He said he wasn't able to make a living during the outbreak, then he discovered this place."
