While there are only ten confirmed cases of coronavirus in Majorca, the holiday destination has been hit hard by punters fearful of the disease.

The Hotel Chain Association announced that there had been "more cancellations than reservations" on the Balearic island.

The low occupancy rates are expected to continue for the next five or six weeks.

The organisation said that all hotels with less than 30% of beds filled would close.

Those booked into the beleaguered institutions would be moved to hotels that remain open.

The president of ACH, Gabriel Llobera, told the Olive Press : "The low sales levels are unlikely to change in the next two weeks, so the Balearic Islands and other holiday will be affected at Easter."

The cancellation of a high profile medical event is also likely to hurt business on the island.

The XV Congress of the Spanish Society of Glaucoma has been called off, meaning 400 ophthalmologists will not longer be heading to Majorca.

The coronavirus spread across the world is predicted to have a huge financial impact on the tourist industry.

The International Air Transport association has estimated that its losses of £23 billion in 2020.

Today the global nature of the viral spread was confirmed by the World Health Organisation.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the blunt admission that the Covid-19 form of the coronavirus should now be "characterized as a pandemic".

By the organisations own definition, a pandemic is “an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries and usually affecting a large number of people”.
