Coronavirus lockdowns for Cardiff, Swansea and Llanelli - the new rules explained

Cardiff and Swansea are the latest cities to go into a local lockdown as Coronavirus cases rise in the area.

Cardiff, just an hour from Bristol, will go into lockdown along with Swansea and Llanelli from Sunday, September 27, the Welsh Government has confirmed.

The lockdowns in Cardiff and Swansea will take place at a council level, whereas Llanelli will be subjected to the regulations at a town level rather than local authority, with 13 council wards covered by the measures.

The local lockdowns will being at 6pm on Sunday, September 27, reports Wales Online.

The new rules mean people in all of the areas subject to the new measures:

  • Must wear a face covering in shops if they are aged over 11.
  • Can no longer meet with people from other households indoors. Extended households will not be allowed and overnight stays will be banned.
  • Cannot enter or leave the borough council area without a "reasonable excuse". This includes work, if people are unable to work from home, as well as making a compassionate visit to a loved one or to provide care.
  • Can only meet others outdoors.

The lockdowns have been introduced after the incidence rate reached 38.2 per 100,000 people in Cardiff on Thursday based on a rolling average of the previous seven days.

Latest infection rates in Swansea stand at 49.8 per 100,000 people.

The announcement means eight of Wales' 22 local authorities will be under local lockdown when the measures take effect.

Wales' first local lockdown, which came into effect in Caerphilly on September 8, was on Thursday extended by a further week while Rhondda Cynon Taf was also placed under restrictions which began on September 17.

Local lockdowns for Newport, Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil, and Blaenau Gwent were announced on Monday and came into force on Tuesday.
