Coronavirus lockdown: Six things you can't do in Edinburgh from Saturday

With tougher lockdown rules coming into place across Scotland from Saturday, we've taken a quick look at what the key changes will be in Edinburgh.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced the move amid increasing number of coronavirus cases and hospital admissions, and it's hoped putting stricter rules in place now will bring the virus under control.

Announcing the six key changes, Nicola Sturgeon said there was early signs the current restrictions were working, but said we were in a race against the virus to get the vaccine out as quickly as possible.

Due to the new variant of Covid "spreading rapidly", the First Minster stated that "there is no room for complacency".

To help you understand what the new rules are, we've set out how the changes might affect you below.

Click and collect for essential shops only

Click-and-collect will now be limited to essential items only and there will be staggered appointment times at those shops which are still allowed to operate such services.

Essential items will include things like clothes and footwear, baby equipment, homeware and books. All other click and collect services will be unable to operate.

You will also not be allowed to go inside to collect items, Nicola Sturgeon announced.

No drinking outdoors

With drinking outside in Edinburgh allowed, many pubs have taken advantage of being able to offer takeaway services even if they have had to close indoors and beer gardens.

But from Saturday this will no longer be allowed either, so buying a takeaway pint to drink outdoors will not be possible in the city.

Tougher rules for takeaways

The government were concerned that too many people were still gathering inside restaurants in order to collect takeaways, so new rules have been introduced to prevent this.

From Saturday, takeaway collection must take place from a door or a hatch.

It's hoped this will cut down the number of interactions between other customers and staff.

Leaving home, and staying away from home

A legal loophole in the previous guidance meant that as long you originally left home for an essential reason, like a medical appointment, you were then able to stay away from home for a non-essential reason, like sightseeing.

From Saturday, you will need an essential reason for leaving and staying away from home. The change is intended to provide "legal clarity" and help police enforce the rules.

Working from home

The government are also strengthening the obligation for employers to support their staff to work from home, and businesses will be told that if staff worked from home during the first lockdown they should be doing so again now.

Only essential construction and repair work inside your home

From Saturday, construction and repair work inside your house will only be allowed if it is essential for the upkeep or safety of the property.

This is already guidance, but it will now be made law, so things like getting a new bathroom fitted for non-essential reasons will be not possible.
