Coronavirus lockdown in Scotland to be extended for further three weeks

An announcement is expected to be made on Thursday which will extend the lockdown in Scotland by a further three weeks.

It comes as a government source told the Daily Mirror that the cabinet is in disagreement about just what the exit strategy could look like.

The Mirror has reported that Scotland and the rest of the UK will be told to stay in their homes until at least May 7.

According to the report, Dominic Raab, who is covering for Boris Johnson while he recovers from coronavirus, is ready to announce the three-week extension.

The lockdown has to be reviewed every three weeks by law, meaning that new measures must be revealed on Thursday.

Government officials have confirmed this week, that there is no chance of the lockdown being lifted any time soon.

Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey warned today: "We’re talking about a battle against coronavirus that isn’t gong to be over in weeks - it will take months.”

And Chief Scientific Advisor Sir Patrick Vallance warned Britain must first be "firmly on the other side" of the peak of new cases and deaths.

While daily deaths are beginning to drop, it is still being considered too early to know if the UK has hit a peak or not.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock is said to be anxious to push the "stay home and save lives" message, and is worried that this could be undermined if non-essential businesses are allowed to reopen.

There are fears a longer closure of schools will damage the prospects of poorer children.

But government sources have denied Education Secretary Gavin Williamson is pushing for them to reopen.

They told the Mirror: “Schools are closed until further notice and that won’t change until the scientific advice changes.”
