Coronavirus lockdown extended in Republic of Ireland

Leo Varadkar has this afternoon announced that the Republic of Ireland's lockdown restrictions will be extended for three more weeks.

Speaking at a live briefing, the Taoiseach said it will now last a further three weeks until Tuesday, May 5.

The Taoiseach said we “cannot be complacent” and we “have to keep going”, reports the Irish Mirror.

The NPHET will put their latest expert guidance forward at a meeting on Friday morning which could have been taken on board by the Taoiseach and Government ministers.

Lockdown restrictions were originally supposed to last until Easter Sunday but with the curve now beginning to flatten - the recommendations have been made to keep up the good work.
