Coronavirus lockdown: Bristol family build fully-operational pub in their back garden

Nothing beats a few pints and a catch up with mates down your local, which is something many of us are looking forward to doing again once lockdown is lifted.

But one family in Bristol decided they couldn't wait any longer - so decided to build a pub in their own back garden.

The Glasson family constructed the Glasson Bar from scratch outside their house in Bishopsworth, and are now enjoying spending boozy evenings together in there.

Dad Lyndon, who is currently on furlough leave from his job as a maintenance worker for Everyone Active, said owning his own pub has been a lifelong dream.

"Since lockdown started we've been doing lots of fun activities as a family to keep us entertained, including crazy golf tournaments around the house and disco nights," he said.

"I've always wanted my own bar and as I'm currently on furlough I decided there would be no better time to make that dream a reality.

"We've all had a part to play in building Glasson Bar, learning new skills along the way and it's been really good fun. Since it opened we've already had a few drunken nights in there and we're looking forward to many more."

With Lyndon, his wife Cathy, their two adult children and their childrens' partners, who are living with the family during lockdown, all working as a team to get the job done, the boozer was completed in just two weeks - and they certainly knew how to toast their efforts.

Once the all-important bespoke Glasson Bar sign was in place, having been ordered online, they celebrated the completion of the pub by having one almighty party.

All great boozers have an impressive range of tipples and that's the case here, with lagers and ciders sitting alongside sherry, peach schnapps, gin, vodka, Jack Daniel's, Pimm's, a selection of wine and more, ensuring everyone is catered for.

Since opening night the publicans have enjoyed playing drinking games in their newly-created local, including card games where the loser has to take a shot.

"We're very happy with the bar and it's been really nice spending time as a family in there, rather than just sat in front of the telly," added Lyndon.

"But we're not finished yet - we're going to keep adding bits here and there to make it even better.

"And after the lockdown we're going to invite all our friends and family over for one belter of a party."
