Coronavirus: Lidl and Morrisons install cough-proof screens to protect staff

Lidl and Morrisons are stepping up safety measures by installing cough-proof screens to protect their check out staff.

The supermarkets are rolling out the protective screens as staff are working on the frontline to keep people's families fed.

Christian Härtnagel, CEO at Lidl GB, said: “The safety of our colleagues and customers continues to be a key priority for us, which is why all of our stores here in Great Britain will be fitted with protection screens at checkouts.

“We hope that this additional safeguard will help to provide extra reassurance for those both working and shopping in our stores.

“We are eternally grateful to all of our store teams who are working hard every day to support their communities.

"And, we would once again like to thank customers for their consideration during this very challenging time.”

Last week, the supermarket announced that it was creating up to 2,500 new store jobs to provide necessary additional support to its workforce and customers.

And Morrisons tweeted to say: "We're installing new protective screens at all our store checkouts this week, to help keep our customers and our colleagues safe."

As the nation goes into lockdown to fight the  coronavirus, many UK supermarkets have enforced new rules and opening hours to keep shelves stocked and give priority access to certain people.

TescoAsdaAldi, MorrisonIceland  and  Sainsbury's  have all altered their opening times and put in new rules to stop shoppers from panic buying.

Many have decided to make special arrangements for NHS staff as well as elderly and vulnerable customers to gain exclusive early access to their stores.
