Coronavirus levels in every area of Liverpool ranked from highest to lowest

As coronavirus cases continue to come down across Liverpool, infection rates continue to vary massively across the city.

According to the latest Liverpool Council coronavirus report, published today, infection levels in the city as a whole stood at 273.5 cases per 100,000 in the week up to January 5, with 1371 cases recorded.

That is a continued decline on the week before but officials in the city warned again today that an apparent slowing of the rate of decline in infections threatens the city’s recovery.

Earlier today, public health director Matt Ashton asked people to stick as strongly as possible to lockdown restrictions to ensure the fall in i nfections continues.

He tweeted: “The number of Covid19 cases locally are falling, but remain high, and rate of decrease is slowing.

“Essential we all #StayAtHome wherever possible, #GetTested when we have # Covid19 symptoms, and at all other times strictly follow #HandsFaceSpace.”

In addition to the slowing fall in infections, some areas of the city continue to have significantly higher rates.

Variations within a relatively small geographical area are common and infection rates within wards are much more likely to swing significantly in one direction or the other.

That is because the lower population levels in wards mean an increase by a handful of cases can cause a much larger swing in the infection rate than would be shown across the city as a whole.

Nevertheless, the divide in Liverpool is stark. Warbreck, the area with the highest infection level, has an infection rate more than seven times as high as Central, the area with the lowest.

At the other end of the scale is Central ward, which has an infection rate of 68,7 cases per 100,000 people
