Coronavirus latest: Number of cases in Bristol remains unchanged

The number of people infected with coronavirus across the Bristol area has not changed today (Monday), new figures confirm.

Every evening, Public Health England has been updating its website, showing a breakdown of each area.

The total number of infected patients stands at 319 across the UK.

As of 9am on Monday, March 9, the Department of Health and Social Care said 24,960 people have been tested with 319 of those tests coming back as positive.

The breakdown of those figures show two cases were in Bristol - this, Bristol City Council, say is an error, however. The council today said only one infected person is from the city.

Last week it was reported a Bristol worker, who is now in China, tested positive, which could be why the two authorities have different numbers.

There are still no cases in North Somerset or South Gloucestershire.

Earlier today (Monday) a branch of Greggs in Nailsea was closed amid  COVID-19 fears.

Bristol Live understands a member of staff had returned to work after a holiday in Venice, although Greggs has refused to provide an official statement.

Guidelines now advise anyone who has travelled back from a lockdown zone in Italy - which now includes Venice - should self isolate and call the NHS on 101, even if they do not have symptoms.

Prime Minster Boris Johnson tonight called for a 'national effort' to tackle the outbreak.

"Containment is very unlikely to work on its own and that is why we are making preparations for a move to the delay phase," he said at a press conference in Downing Street.

Mr Johnson also warned against panic buying and stockpiling as members of the public rushed to get hold of certain food and items, including toilet paper and hand sanitiser.

"It's very important that everyone should behave responsibly and think about others, " he said, adding: "We will make sure we do everything we can to keep supermarkets stocked and keep the economy working." Within the next fortnight, anyone with flu-like symptoms will be urged to stay at home for seven days and not infect their workplace.
