How it happened: Coronavirus latest news and updates, May 1

As the COVID-19 pandemic grinds on around the world, Australian leaders are poised to discuss how to begin rolling back restrictions on everyday life.

The death toll in Australia has reached 93 after another resident of the Newmarch House aged care home in Sydney died. As of 3pm on Thursday, there were 6753 confirmed cases of coronavirus across the country but of that 5714 had recovered.

The ACT was declared free of active cases on Thursday. ACT's chief health officer Dr Kerryn Coleman warned the pandemic was still ongoing and encouraged anyone with symptoms to come forward for testing.

On Friday, the national cabinet is meeting again to plan a retreat from the restrictions put in place to flatten the curve. They are expected to discuss how to bring back elite and local sport, restarting classroom-based learning in schools and how to expand testing across the country. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr is also expected to reveal how the territory intends to start rolling back restrictions.
