Coronavirus latest: Mexican producer of Corona beer suspends brewing due to COVID-19 pandemic

The company that produces Corona beer has suspended brewing in Mexico due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country.

The Mexican government has suspended all non-essential services until April 30 as the nation battles a coronavirus outbreak that has seen over 1,500 confirmed cases and 50 deaths.

Grupo Modelo said it would complete the full suspension of production in the coming days.

A company statement said: "We are in the process of lowering production at our plants to the bare minimum."

The popular beer is exported to 180 countries but there had been rumours sales had taken a serious hit due to unintentional association with the deadly bug.

But Constellation Brands, which exports the beer to the US, hit back at those rumours last month.

Senior director of communications Maggie Bowman said:  "Despite the misinformation circulating, consumer sentiment and sales remain strong. Consumers understand there’s no linkage between the virus and our business."

Nielsen data from Credit Suisse showed last week that sales for Constellation Brands had actually increased by 39% with Corona up 50%.

The beer has reportedly become extremely popular during "happy hour" virtual parties held through apps such as Zoom.
