Coronavirus: Latest Government travel advice for Brits as airlines axe flights

The Government continues to stress Brits should only travel to some countries if it is "essential".

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is constantly assessing the risk of travel in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

It says travelling to some regions of Spain, including Madrid and La Rioja and the municipalities of La Bastida and Vitoria, presents significant risks.

Some airlines, including Jet 2, today cancelled flights to Spain altogether .

"In response to coronavirus measures we are advising against all and all but essential travel to some countries, cities and regions. You must check the travel advice to the country you are travelling to," the FCO website says.

Prepare for your travel

It adds: "It is your responsibility to make sure you are prepared for travel. You should:

  • " check the travel advice  and sign-up for email alerts for your destination

  • "make sure you have  appropriate travel insurance  if you have concerns about coronavirus, contact your travel insurance provider to check what will be covered should you become sick or required by local authorities to self-isolate or quarantine while travelling

  • "check with your airline, tour operator, cruise line or other transport and accommodation providers for any coronavirus-related changes

  • "plan ahead for any potential disruption to your travel."

Get travel insurance

The advice continues: "Make sure you have appropriate insurance for overseas travel, and purchase it as soon as you book your holiday. It’s your responsibility to make sure you’re covered. Read our  guidance on purchasing insurance .

"We only advise against travel to a particular country when the risks to British nationals are unacceptably high. You should check the detail of your travel insurance to see what it covers, and contact your insurance provider if you have any questions.

"If you are travelling with your family, and you have travel plans before or during the Easter holidays, make sure you have appropriate travel insurance. A family or group policy may be suitable.

"The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has published information on the  travel insurance implications of coronavirus . Contact your travel insurance provider if you have further questions about your cover or would like reassurance."

Both British and Italian authorities strongly advise against travelling to Italy.

The majority of carriers have also now ceased operating direct flights between Italy and the UK anyway.

The FCO added: "If you are aged 70 and over, or if you have underlying health conditions, we advise you against cruise ship travel at this time.

"If you are due to travel on an international cruise, contact your travel company for the latest information."

France has, meanwhile, become the latest country to close shops, restaurants, entertainment complexes and other business in a bid to protect the spread of the virus.

Édouard Philippe, the nation's Prime Minister, said: "I have decided to close all non-indispensable locations.

"We must absolutely limit our movements."

"I am conscious of the efforts and sacrifices that we are asking, but I have faith that the French people will have the capacity to overcome this serious moment."
