Coronavirus: Latest cases, rates and deaths as Bristol awaits Tier 2 decision

Six coronavirus deaths and a further 205 cases have been confirmed in the Bristol area over the last 24 hours as the city's Tier decision looms.

Two people died in Bristol, while another two deaths were recorded in both Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire today (December 15), the latest Government data shows.

All of the patients have tested positive for the disease within the last 28 days.

Figures also show that Bristol's Covid rate per 100,000 has fallen once again, as the city confirmed 87 more cases.

Our rate stands at 115.2, a big reduction compared to yesterday's 120. This means we have dropped 25 places in the UK ranking, and are now 266th out of a possible 380 areas.

South Gloucestershire has a higher rate of 153.3, which places it 186th.

This is still below England's rate of 184, but significantly above the South West's 86.8.

Public Health England's latest figures for the South West's hospital admissions were published on December 11, when 103 people were admitted in one day. This brings the region's overall number of Covid inpatients to 712.

The breakdown of new cases

Today's daily rise in cases for each part of the region is recorded below, with the total figure during the pandemic in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: +36 (4,007)

  • Bristol: +87 (16,510)

  • North Somerset: +24 (4,649)

  • South Gloucestershire: +58 (7,095)

UK cases

Some areas in England have seen their cases doubling every seven days.

Today, 20,263 more people tested positive for the deadly virus across the UK.

A further 232 Covid patients people died over the past 24 hours.

Urgent talks are underway reviewing whether the planned easing of Covid rules should go ahead over Christmas.
