Coronavirus: Latest cases, deaths and rates as Bristol holds its breath for tier change

'Bristol's had a very sharp rise in cases and a very sharp fall'.

This is how Matt Hancock described our city's response to coronavirus this evening (December 14) - just two days before we learn what kind of restrictions will be imposed us.

The latest breakdown of cases show Bristol's rate per 100,000 is now lower than North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and the national average.

Our city's rate stands at 120, which places us 241th out of a possible 380 areas.

North Somerset's rate has peaked at 122.8, South Gloucestershire's is 148 and England's is 173.3.

The latest data shows two more people died across the Bristol region after contracting the disease.

One in South Gloucestershire and the other in Bath and North East Somerset.

Public Health England's latest figures for the South West's hospital admissions were published on December 11, when 103 people were admitted in one day. This brings the region's overall number of Covid inpatients to 712.

There have been a further 232 coronavirus deaths in the UK and an additional 20,263 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours.

That's more than 5,000 more infections than were recorded last Monday, December 7.

It takes the total number of fatalities within 28 days of a positive test to 64,170 and the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 1,869,666.
