Coronavirus latest as Junior and Leaving Cert oral exams cancelled and students awarded marks of 100%

Oral and practical exams for the Leaving and Junior Cert have been cancelled, with students set to be awarded 100%.

The Department of Education has said that students who study a foreign language and/or Irish will get full marks in their oral and practical exams due to the cancellation.

The exams had been due to take place from next Monday until Friday, April 3.

Education Minister Joe McHugh made the announcement during a press briefing today.

A decision on written exams in June has not yet been made, but he added that the Department was working on the basis that they would go ahead as normal.

Exams affected include oral exams for Irish, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Japanese as well as Leaving and Junior Cert music practical exams and Home Economics.

There have also been changes to deadlines for project work and course work.

The original deadlines had been set between Friday, March 20 to Friday, 24 April. Students will now be given until May 15 to finish their work.

Minister McHugh said that this is a "difficult time for students" and added that it was the "fairest response" the department could take given the circumstances.
