Coronavirus latest as Irish call centre closes after employee diagnosed with Covid-19 bug

An Irish call centre has closed after an employee was diagnosed with coronavirus.

Lloyds Banking Group has shut its Belfast office after a member of staff contracted the deadly Covid-19 bug this morning.

The employee at the Halifax call centre - who wished to remain anonymous - said that they had been asked not to come into work.

There are now 33 total cases of the virus on the island of Ireland, with 12 in Northern Ireland and 21 in the Republic.

It is understood that more than 1,000 people work in the building.

Belfast Live contacted the Lloyds Banking Group who confirmed that an employee had been diagnosed with coronavirus.

A automated message on the newsline said: "Our office in Belfast is currently closed due to an employee being diagnosed with COVID-19.

"All colleagues will been notified of any action to take, including alternative working arrangements.

"Your line manager will keep in touch with you and confirm when the building will reopen."

The call centre office is based at the Belfast Gasworks in the Cromac Place area in South Belfast.

It is also understood that some employee's have been asked to self-isolate, work from home, or work from a training site based in Dundonald on Tuesday depending on what part of the building they worked on.

The bank said it would now "allow for the appropriate areas of the site to be cleaned" following the diagnosis.

On Monday, Belfast city Council agreed to cancel this year’s St. Patrick's Day parade and concert amid Coronavirus fears.

Meanwhile, two schools in Northern Ireland were closed yesterday after a young person tested positive for Coronavirus, the Health Minister has announced.
