Coronavirus latest as Bristol reaches nearly 300 positive COVID-19 cases

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Bristol has reached nearly 300, according to the latest Public Health England figures.

Data from Saturday (April 11) shows that a further 22 people have been infected with  coronavirus  in Bristol in just 24 hours.

It brings the city's total number cases to 291, up from 269 on Friday.

It's likely the real figure is in the thousands however because the government is currently only testing certain patients and some NHS workers.

As of Saturday morning (April 11), there were six new cases in North Somerset, bringing the total number to 106. The data also revealed eight new cases in South Gloucestershire, where the total number of people falling ill with the virus has now reached 199.

There were also eight new cases recorded in Bath and North East Somerset, where the total has now surpassed 100 with 105 confirmed cases.

The UK's coronavirus death toll now stands at 9,875, compared to 8,958, on Friday.

The 917 people whose deaths were added to the total on Saturday, include an 11-year-old child, the Department of Health and Social Care said.

The number of confirmed cases in the UK is now up to 78, 991, as of 9am on Saturday, April 11 - up from 73, 758 the day before.

The increase in cases comes as a Bristol bus driver has ‘pleaded and begged’ passengers to stop using cash on buses to minimise the risk to drivers of catching coronavirus.

So far this weekend Avon and Somerset police have been inundated with calls from the the public reporting apparent breaches of the coronavirus lockdown, with the force now urging people to  go online first to report people gathering in groups, having parties or not adhering to the coronavirus lockdown guidelines.
