Coronavirus kills nine elderly people at East Lothian's Tranent care home

Nine people at a care home in East Lothian have tragically died from coronavirus.

The Scottish Sun reported this morning that nine elderly residents at the Tranent care home which is operated by HC One in East Lothian had passed away.

It was reported by the newspaper that all of the deaths have been linked to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Responding to questions from Edinburgh Live, the care home refused to confirm the number of deaths.

The operator's website says the 60-bed Tranent home provides nursing and dementia care for elderly residents, as well as end of life care.

A spokesman for the Tranent home said: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with those who have lost a loved one.

“We are doing what we can to support them. And we are working closely with our local health and care partners and continuing to take action to secure the medical equipment, PPE and supplies we need to protect residents and colleagues alike.”

The Care Inspectorate said: “Our inspectors are contacting all care homes regularly to provide guidance, advice and support.

“This is a really worrying time for people experiencing care, their loved ones and those who work in care. Our thoughts are with all those affected.”

The Daily Record suggests there have been around 50 deaths at Scottish care homes linked to the virus.

Castle View care home in Dumbarton has suffered 11 deaths, with the elderly residents also reported to have died at care facilities in Glasgow, Dundee and Lanarkshire.
