South Gloucestershire recorded a jump of eight, meaning a total of 979 people there have been diagnosed with the deadly virus since the start of the pandemic.

Nationally, 34 further Covid-related deaths were recorded, bringing the UK's total to 41,936.

R rate

The South West's R number is believed to be as high as 1.4 as cases surge.

UK-wide, the R rate is 1.2 to 1.5, which means on average every 10 infected people will spread the virus to between 12 and 15 other people.

And the UK's growth rate is +4 per cent to +8 per cent – meaning the number of new cases is between 4 per cent and 8 per cent every day.

While the South West's R rate is 1.1 to 1.4, with a growth rate between 1 to 6 per cent.
