Jonathan Ross posted a rare political comment on Twitter after feeling the need to chastise Boris Johnson’s “inept leadership”.
The television presenter shared the post after the prime minister addressed the nation in his latest lockdown speech, which has been heavily criticised.
In the recorded speech, Johnson set out limited relaxations of quarantine rules for England, but his promise of “the first sketch of a roadmap for reopening society” left millions of viewers confused about the next steps.
His decision to ditch the “stay home” advice in favour of new guidance to “stay alert, control the virus, save lives” was rejected by Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Following the speech, Ross wrote on Twitter: “I rarely comment on politics here, and avoid publicly siding with one party (all pretty useless at the moment) because no one should give a s*** about celebs’ opinions.”
He continued: “But it’s hard to imagine a greater display of inept leadership and muddled thinking then Boris just displayed.”
Other stars also tore into Johnson’s speech on Twitter.
Matt Lucas impersonated the prime minister in a video parody of the recording, while comedian Frankie Boyle joked about the confusing messaging.
“‘Stay alert’ to virus 0.125 microns in diameter, advises government scientist Doctor Manhattan,” he tweeted in reference to Alan Moore’s dystopian graphic novel Watchmen.
