Johnny Vegas delivers food to vulnerable residents and NHS staff amid coronavirus lockdown

Johnny Vegas is hitting the streets of his hometown to deliver food to vulnerable residents and NHS staff during the coronavirus outbreak.

The comedian, 49, hails from St Helens in Lancashire and has teamed up with a number of local charities to help get essentials to those who need them during the crisis.

Former rugby league star Steve Prescott is part of the initiative and he shared pictures of Johnny out doing deliveries.

He tweeted: "Our Delivery Team @BrookOA assisted by @JohnnyVegasReal @briers6 @twadder71 @bufferlad1 @andrew_mikhail are now ready to go! #Makethatcall 01744881881 #StHelenstogether @EcclestonArms Essential Items #StayHomeSaveLives #ProtectTheNHS."

In one of Johnny's videos, he's seen arriving at the front door of an elderly couple to pass on a food delivery.

The homeowner is seen looking shocked to see Johnny outside his home, and called it a "a lovely surprise".

The scheme is also being supported by Hollywood actor Russell Crowe, who filmed a video urging St Helens residents to get in touch with the volunteers if they need help.

He also couldn't resist making a joke about his pal Johnny, laughing: "One of the delivery workers is going to be Johnny Vegas though, so expect to lose every second or third biscuit."

Russell added of the scheme: "G'day folks, how you doing? This is a message on behalf of my old mate Johnny Vegas.

"If you're in the St Helens area, if you're having trouble getting food deliveries from your local supermarket.

"If you're NHS staff - a key worker, elderly, isolating, vulnerable, call this number 01744881881."
