Coronavirus isolation pods installed at Weston General Hospital

Coronavirus isolation pods have been installed at Weston General Hospital.

The pods have been installed at the North Somerset hospital this week under the direction of the NHS.

According to Public Health England, there has been just one confirmed case of coronavirus in North Somerset - although the district's council says this is an error and there are actually no cases confirmed within the local authority area.

The NHS has ordered all hospitals to install isolation pods in their emergency departments to keep suspected coronavirus sufferers away from other patients.

Anyone believed to have the virus will be kept in the units for at least 24 hours while tests are carried out.

Patients will be discharged from isolation once they have had two negative respiratory tests for the virus 24 hours apart, which means they are no longer infectious and pose no risk to the public.

The pop-up facilities have started appearing outside A&Es as the number of confirmed cases in the UK has risen to more than 300.

The pods will only need to be decontaminated if a patient shows symptoms of the virus.

A spokesman for Weston Area Health Trust said: “Following national guidance all hospitals are putting in place NHS 111 pods at their emergency departments, so that anyone attending hospital with symptoms of the virus can be kept isolated from other patients and avoid causing unnecessary pressure in A&E.

“Over the coming weeks many more of us may need to self-isolate at home for a period to reduce this virus's spread.

“Everyone can continue to play their part by taking simple steps such as washing hands to prevent the spread of infection and calling NHS 111 first before going to the doctors or A&E if they have any concerns about or show symptoms of coronavirus.”

A total of 41 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the south west by Public Health England (PHE).

Of those, one coronavirus case is in Bristol and one in North Somerset. South Gloucestershire has no recorded cases.

The UK has the fifth highest number of confirmed cases in Europe, according to the World Health Organisation, behind Italy, France, Germany and Spain.
