Coronavirus: Is Amazon still delivering in the UK and can I return items?

With non-essential shops ordered to close across the UK, people are starting to wonder how their online orders will be affected.

Amazon shoppers are some of those wondering what will happen

In a statement Amazon wrote: “We believe our role serving customers and the community during this time is a critical one, and we want to make sure our customers can get the items they need, when they need them.

“As COVID-19 has spread, we've recently seen an increase in people shopping online which has had an impact on how we serve our customers, but we are working around the clock with our selling partners to ensure availability of essential products, and to continue to bring on additional capacity to deliver customer orders.”

But how is the outbreak of coronavirus currently affecting the way the global company operates?

The MEN reports the Amazon website has recently been updated its FAQs with answers relating to how it will run during the pandemic.

Here's what Amazon shoppers wanted to know:

Can I place an order? Will Amazon deliver my parcel?

Amazon has stated that it is continuing to serve customers.

The company said: “You can check the current delivery times at order check-out or via Your Orders in your account.

“When selecting a delivery address, be aware that companies and businesses may be closed and unable to receive parcels.”

Are delivery times affected?

Amazon is currently working to ensure it can continue to deliver to its most affected customers - some of whom have no other way of getting their essentials.

Prioritising these customers could lead to longer delivery times for others purchasing less essential items.

It said: “We are prioritising the intake and dispatch of items most needed by our customers right now. These are items such as food, health and personal care products, books and items needed to work from home.

“As a result, please note that delivery times for some items may be longer than usual at the moment.”

Is it possible to return items?

Coronavirus: The support measures in place for businesses

Amazon said: “Yes, you can continue to return items.

“Go to My Orders to return an item or check the return window for your order.”

Is it safe to receive orders?

Some users were concerned about the risk of goods contaminated with coronavirus being delivered to them.

Reassuring its users, Amazon said: “The likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low and the risk of catching the virus that causes COVID-19 from a package that has been moved, travelled, and exposed to different conditions and temperature is also low.”

Is it possible to reduce contact with the driver when they deliver my order?

And as many consumers are currently self-isolating, some wanted to know if reduced contact with delivery drivers is possible.

The global company confirmed this is currently possible, commenting: “Drivers have been advised to reduce contact with customers by placing packages at the customer’s doorstep and stepping back.

“If an ID check is required, these are now performed at a distance.”
