Coronavirus Irish sport: Rob Cornwall praises wage guarantee saying he's 'proud to be a Bohemians player’

Rob Cornwall admits he feared the worst before receiving a wage guarantee from Bohemians bosses.

Cornwall, 25, watched on as clubs like Cork City and Sligo Rovers froze payments to players and management, with SSE Airtricity League action suspended until at least June 19.

But Bohs announced on Sunday that they planned to honour contracts by introducing an altered payment scheme.

"I was pleasantly surprised to be fair, because obviously we've seen other clubs going a different way," Cornwall said

"I would have understood if that was what all clubs in the league were going to have to do.

"It was great to hear and it obviously comes from years of hard work from the board, from supporters and the community around Phibsborough and Dalymount as well. It'd make you proud to be a Bohs player."

The defender explained how the onus is on players to keep up their fitness during a period of uncertainty due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"It's going to be almost like another off-season now," he added.

"We're still training ourselves and we're taking instruction from our strength and conditioning coach, Remy Thang, and Cathal Murtagh who does our GPS analytics.

"All of our training is basically mimicking what we were doing anyway and we're keeping in touch over Whatsapp as a squad as well."

Cornwall also faces challenges in his day-job as a personal trainer in Dublin - but he has been able to keep up that work despite gym closures.

"The worry is obviously that people who are paused from their jobs will be looking at their bills thinking, 'I'm not going to be able to go to the gym so I'll cancel'", he explained.

"But you can still give very decent coaching (online). You can still get a full whack for your money.

"We have an app which you can book on to, so people book their classes in the same way, we set up a video call, and we all make sure that we can see and hear each other.

"You have people of all ages up to their 60s and 70s getting online and keeping up their fitness routine, it's very doable really."
