Coronavirus: Irish FA suspends all domestic and grassroots football until April 4

The Irish FA has suspended all domestic and grassroots football until April 4 amid the growing coronavirus outbreak.

The association's Board met on Friday to discuss the evolving crisis.

As a result the current football season has been suspended - at both domestic and grassroots level - including the Danske Bank Premiership.

In a statement, the Irish FA said: "The Irish FA Board has met today. In response to the evolving situation around Coronavirus (Covid-19), and having listened to partners throughout the football family, the Board has suspended the current football season, at both domestic and grassroots level.

"The decision has been made with public health but, equally, the health and safety of players, match officials, staff and volunteers front of mind.

"We expect games to restart on Saturday 4 April 2020. The matter will be kept under constant review.

"This means no affiliated football will be played in Northern Ireland until that time.

"Government advice and that from the health authorities remains in place. We continue to encourage people to visit  NHSUK/coronavirus  for information about the virus and how to protect yourself and use the  111 online coronavirus service  to check if you need medical help."

The NI Football League initially said on Thursday night that this weekend's games would go ahead as planned in the Premiership, Championship and Premier Intermediate League.

But pressure was mounting on the league to act after leagues in England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland all imposed blanket bans on football activity.

Other sports have also postponed events and competitions until further notice, including the GAA and rugby.

Responding to the Irish FA's statement, the NI Football League said: "As directed by the Irish Football Association, all matches under the jurisdiction of the NI Football League will be suspended until the above date.

"The NI Football League will continue to review the liaise with the Irish Football Association on this matter and provide further updates in due course."
