Coronavirus Ireland: Youngest person with Covid-19 is baby aged 1 while oldest was 99-year-old

The oldest person to be diagnosed with coronavirus was 99 years old and the youngest was a one-year-old baby, official figures show.

It has also emerged that the number of outbreaks of the disease in nursing homes has also risen to 57.

Even more worrying it has been revealed that over a quarter of all the confirmed cases are healthcare workers.

The statistics analysed by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre show that 1,163 healthcare staff or 26.2% of all cases, are suffering from the disease.

The figures released show that of last Friday night the total number cases associated with clusters was 903 or 20.3% while the number of imported cases was 319 or 7.2%.

The statistics also show that the coronavirus is no respecter of age with 11 children aged just one year contracting the disease.

Those over 65 were the worse affected by far with 1,070 testing positive for the condition which is almost a quarter of all cases (24.1%).

The region with the most cases is the east of the country with 2,774 cases or 62% of the national total.

Most of the cases recorded in the east are in the Dublin area where 2,490 cases or 56%.

On the other hand the least affected area is the North West which recorded 122 cases or 2.7% of the total.

The east of the country has also the highest number of clusters in nursing homes with 41 of the total of 57.

The hospitals in the east had also the most clusters at 26 out of a national total of 43.
