Coronavirus Ireland: Young people hit by big jump in Covid-19 cases as Dr Ronan Glynn issues warning

There was a big jump in coronavirus cases recorded in young people over the last 24 hours, latest statistics reveal.

This evening 40 more cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in Ireland.

And 30 of these infections were in people under the age of 45, the Acting Chief Medical Officer confirmed.

While the median age of all the new cases is 33-years-old.

Dr Ronan Glynn warned that anyone who feels they may have been a close-contact of someone with Covid-19 must come forward for a test immediately.

He said: “Today’s cases are spread across a range of different settings and age groups.

"75% of cases are under 45 years of age, with a median age of 33 years. At least half of today's cases were known close contacts of other confirmed cases.

“It remains vital that if a person is concerned that they have been in contact with a confirmed case or is experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, that they isolate and come forward for testing without delay.”

The rise tonight brings the total number of infections here to 25,929.
