A young girl with complex medical needs got her very own Garda escort to the local park yesterday so she could get out for the first time in almost three months.
Daisy McDonald, from Templeogue in Dublin, and her mother Lynn were helped on an eagerly awaited trip to Bushy Park.
The seven-year-old, who is terminally ill with a rare condition known as Rett Syndrome and is medically vulnerable, has been staying at home with her family for eleven weeks.
She was reduced to tears on Thursday when her mum had to leave the park and wheel her home because people were not observing the two-hour period for cocooners.
But yesterday more than made up for it as Daisy, who is non-verbal, uses a wheelchair and relies on a ventilator to help her breathe, got to see the ducks and swans.
Her delighted mum Lynn said: “To say we were excited for our trip to the park is an understatement.
“For Daisy to feel so wrapped up, loved and appreciated is an indescribable feeling as her mum.
“Today is a very special day and it’s all thanks to the parks department, the guards and the public for backing us and helping to spread the word that all children deserve the right to play and escape outdoors.”
