Coronavirus Ireland: Young child fighting for life after being admitted to ICU with Covid-19

A child is currently fighting for their life after recently contracting the coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland.

The youngster is the third in Ireland in the five to 14 age bracket to have been admitted to an ICU with Covid-19.

The child was put into a critical care facility in the 24 hours prior to midnight on Tuesday.

This is according to the latest report by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

The report, which is prepared daily for the National Public Health Emergency Team, does not state whether the patient has an underlying condition or not.

The gender, location or exact age of the young patient is also not known.

Although three children in the Republic between the ages of five and 14 have now been admitted to an ICU, there have been no deaths in this age profile.

The youngest fatalities in Ireland to date involve two people aged 17 and 23.

These deaths in the 15-24 age bracket represent 0.11% of the number of people here who have passed away due to the bug.

Meanwhile, there were five further Covid related deaths in Ireland announced on Thursday.

These brought the death toll here to 1,664.

There were also 38 more confirmed cases announced by the Department of Health.

The total number of infections in the Republic now stands at 25,142.
