Coronavirus Ireland: 'Winning' update from HSE chief as hospital numbers improve and transmission drops

Ireland is "winning" its battle against COVID-19 the chief of the HSE has said as hospital numbers drop across the country.

In Dublin there were 240 people hospitalised with the coronavirus last night at 8pm, with 96 further suspected cases of the disease.

While 70 of those cases were admitted to ICU, there were 11 critical care beds available to patients at the same time last night.

It's a huge improvement from the numbers seen only weeks ago, and HSE chief Paul Reid has said that the battle is not over yet, but we are "winning".

He once again praised the healthcare teams keeping Irish hospitals afloat and signs that the vaccination is reducing transmission.

He said: "Continued improvement today in those hospitalised (550) & in ICU (135) with #COVID19. Our healthcare teams are exhausted. But getting their vaccination & the great signs of it reducing transmission is giving us all a second wind. We are winning, it's just not over yet."
