Coronavirus Ireland: Why Irish airports still aren't taking temperatures of passengers and are unlikely to start

Ireland's main airports aren't taking temperatures of passengers arriving into the country and are unlikely to start.

That's because expert health advice has not deemed it necessary and both the World Health Organisation and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control have not recommended the measure.

Airports in places like Singapore and China have introduced the screening measures but they have been scarcely implemented in Europe.

A spokesperson for the DAA said: "Irish health officials are not carrying out temperature checks/screening at Irish airports as the HPSC has said it is not an appropriate control measure for Ireland at this time.

"Irish health officials note that this type of airport screening is not recommended by either the World Health Organization or by European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

"Separately, there are formal protocols in place in the event of a passenger presenting with acute respiratory infection on an inbound aircraft, and these will be strictly adhered to at all times."

There are some measures in place at the airports, however, with HSE staff in place throughout terminals.

Arrival areas and baggage halls are all manned by these HSE staff members, who are issuing advice.

All Irish airports are unseasonably quiet at the moment due to the lack of travel coming as a result of the coronavirus.

Cork Airport is now down to three return flights in and out of the airport a day - with all of those travelling to and from London.

The first flight, a British Airways journey to London, leaves at 4pm.

A spokesperson for Dublin Airport said earlier this week: "Our passenger traffic is down more than 95% compared to this week last year."

Ireland West Airport in Knock now has zero commercial flights in and out while Kerry Airport has two flights in and out, both to Dublin.
