Coronavirus Ireland: Why Dublin saw a big drop in Covid-19 cases over the last 24 hours

Dublin saw a big drop in coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, according to official figures.

The number of confirmed infections in the capital fell by 15 in the latest Health Protection Surveillance Centre statistics.

This is a much bigger change than any other county, with Kerry, Kildare and Sligo each reporting an increase of just one.

A total of 12,255 people in Dublin tested positive for Covid-19 up to midnight on Sunday, July 5. This is a fall of 15 from the same figure 24 hours ago.

However health officials have explained the discrepancy by confirming that further analysis of data often sees individual cases moved to different counties.

A spokesman said: "The Health Protection Surveillance Centre have advised that in the process of validating data and reviewing addresses, county totals may change due to cases being reassigned to another county."

This is also the likely cause of the change in Cork's numbers, which saw a drop of one confirmed case over the last 24 hours.

However despite the fall, Dublin remains the hardest hit region in Ireland since the outbreak began, accounting for 48% of all cases here.
