Coronavirus Ireland: What is social distancing and what can and can't I do?

As Ireland entered the delay phase of the coronavirus response on Thursday social distancing was one of the main measures introduced.

The Republic of Ireland now has 70 cases after 24 new cases were confirmed yesterday evening.

Schools have closed, universities are shut, sporting events are cancelled and all inside gatherings of 100 people or more are a no go.

But what exactly does social distancing mean and what are you expected to do?

Social distancing

In simple terms it is making sure you have enough space between you and others as to limit the spread of any viruses including the coronavirus.

As we saw from the announcement on Thursday this meant the closure of schools, colleges etc and cancelling a big outdoor and indoor events.

It also means just standing a little bit further away from people when out and about.

How close is too close?

The World Health Organisation has said that you should try and keep a metre apart from someone who is coughing or sneezing.

Coronavirus is spread by droplets from the nose and mouth when someone sneezes or coughs and if these are inhaled it will be passed on.

How to protect yourself against the coronavirus

The WHO says if you can reach out to someone you may be too close.

Can I still go out and about?

A lot of places are shutting their doors until March 29 under the new measures but there is nothing saying that you cannot leave your house.

People are asked to exercise social distancing practices however and avoid shaking hands, standing too close together and just be mindful of best practice.
