Coronavirus Ireland: What date does new lockdown end and what happens after?

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has this afternoon extended the lockdown by three weeks as Ireland continues to try and flatten the curve.

Measures were originally brought in up until Easter Sunday but these will now run into May.

The recommendations were put forward by the National Public Health Emergency Team on Friday morning and have been taken on-board by the Government and Department of Health.

Here is all we now know about what is happening regarding lockdown and what happens after.

When does lockdown end?

Leo Varadkar has this afternoon announced that Ireland's lockdown restrictions will be extended for three more weeks.

Speaking at a live briefing to the nation the Taoiseach said it will now last a further three weeks until Tuesday, May 5th.

The Taoiseach said we “cannot be complacent” and we “have to keep going”.

Will Ireland get back to normal afterwards?

The Taoiseach has said that there is hope the country can “begin to unwind” after the May 5th date but “cannot guarantee” that.

Further updates will be given in the coming weeks and if numbers keep dropping, restrictions could be lifted.
