Coronavirus Ireland: Watch as nation stops and applauds to show appreciation for our frontline heroes

Here is the moment Ireland stopped and applauded to show appreciation for our frontline workers amid the coronavirus crisis.

People up and down the country dropped what they were doing to join in on a stirring round of applause.

Politicians in the Dail, who brought forward the proposal earlier today, led the chorus of support for essential frontline workers everywhere.

Staff at Cork Airport and the Department of Health were among thousands of others who lined buildings and streets across Ireland.

And RTE broadcast a news report at 8pm to mark the special occasion.

A short report was presented by veteran newsreader Eileen Dunne across RTE One and RTE News Now.

It came after a message had been shared across Ireland urging the public to honour frontline workers

It read: "During these unprecedented times, let us show our true appreciation for all the Nurses, Doctors, GPs, Ambulance crews, carers, support staff, of our health boards for their ongoing hard work as they continue to fight the Covid-19 virus.

"Let us all applaud them to say thank you on Thursday, March 26 at 8pm.

"Give a big round of applause from your front doors, gardens, windows, living rooms - wherever! To show them how much we appreciate all they are doing.

"Please comply with social distancing rules."
