Coronavirus Ireland update today: Further spike as 156 new cases and 2 deaths announced

A further 156 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Ireland this evening.

Meanwhile another 2 people have sadly died due to Covid-19 it has been announced.

The figures were released by the National Public Health Emergency Team this evening.

Of the cases notified today;

  • 81 are men / 75 are women
  • 71% are under 45 years of age
  • 68 are confirmed to be associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case
  • 15 cases have been identified as community transmission
  • 55 in Dublin, 36 in Kildare, 12 in Tipperary, 9 in Limerick, 7 in Kilkenny, 6 in Waterford and the remaining 31 cases are in Carlow, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Laois, Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow.

Dr. Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer said; “This weekend, if you are having people over, please have no more than 6 visitors, from no more than 3 households, to your home. It is vital that people all across the country follow the public health advice. If you have any symptoms, isolate and contact your GP by phone immediately.”

They come as lockdown in Co. Kildare remains in place for a further two weeks while restrictions have since been lifted in Laois and Offaly.

Strict measures were introduced for the midlands counties following an alarming spike in coronavirus cases.

However the government announced yesterday that the spread of the virus has slowed significantly in Laois and Offaly meaning the measures coudld be lifted.

But Kildare remains the county of concern for health chiefs with a continued high number of cases confirmed in recent weeks.

Meanwhile the government continues to deal with the fall out from the Oirechteas Golf event controversy.

The event saw over 80 people attend a plush do at the Station House Hotel in Clifden, Co Galway came after a round of golf on the Connemara Golf Club Championship Links.

Among those in attendance was former Agriculture Minister Dara Calleary who was forced to resign this morning, Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer and EU Commissioner Phil Hogan.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said he was "deeply annoyed and upset" by recent controversy surrounding the event saying he "understands fully" public outrage over politicians flouting coronavirus restrictions.
