Coronavirus Ireland update: Six more deaths as 23 new Covid-19 cases confirmed

Six more people have died from coronavirus in Ireland while 23 new infections have been confirmed here.

It brings the total number of cases in the country to 25,565 since the outbreak began.

While 1,743 people have sadly passed away from Covid-19 here.

The announcement was made by the Department of Health today.

Experts also warned that the R-number has increased and is now "at or above 1".

Professor Phillip Nolan said: "We are seeing an increase in the number of reported cases over the last 2 weeks and the R-number is now at or above 1. There is an immediate need for all of us to take care and caution in our decisions and actions."

Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said: "Today NPHET has recommended that all visitors to healthcare settings including hospitals, GP practices and pharmacies, should wear face coverings.

"15 of today's confirmed cases are directly or indirectly related to travel. NPHET today reiterates that all non-essential travel overseas should be avoided.

"In addition, 77% of cases reported today are under 25 years of age. Covid-19 is extremely infectious and none of us are immune."

It comes after it emerged two people are fighting for their lives with suspected Covid-19 at a hospital which has had little or no confirmed cases for more than two months.

South Tipperary General Hospital was treating no coronavirus patients on the vast majority of days since the beginning of May.

And despite having no person there on Wednesday night who had tested positive for the bug, staff were treating two people in ICU who are suspected of contracting the virus.

There were also two suspected Covid-19 critical care patients in University Hospital Limerick - a hospital which has regularly reported a high number of possible cases on site.

In terms of confirmed cases in ICUs in Ireland, the number remained at nine for a second day in a row.

The Mater in Dublin was the worst hit with three, while Tallaght, Cork, Beaumont, Mercy and Sligo all had one patient in intensive care.

These figures are from the HSE's latest operations report which were recorded as of 8pm on Wednesday.

By this time, there were 12 people with confirmed coronavirus in a hospital setting, with a further 110 suspected cases.
