Coronavirus Ireland update: Five more people die from Covid-19 as 38 new cases announced

A further five people have sadly died from Covid-19 while 38 new cases were confirmed this evening.

The latest figures were announced during a briefing at the Department of Health tonight.

The latest numbers come as Ireland gets set to progress to Phase Two of the Government's roadmap to ease restrictions on Monday.

From then onwards, the 5km travel limit will be extended to 20km.

Meanwhile people will be allowed to visit each others households while practicing social distancing.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar also announced today that the Covid-19 Pandemic Unemployment payment will be will be extended past next week.

But those who only worked part time before the pandemic will have their payment cut.

The Government introduced the scheme in March which offers €350 per week to any worker in Ireland who lost their jobs due to the health crisis.

The Taoiseach has yet to specify how long the full payment will go on for.

However, he insisted that it will be extended "for months" and not weeks.

Leo Varadkar also gave hope that we may hit the skies before the summer is out yet, as he reveals that we are making “real progress” in the battle against coronavirus.

The Taoiseach was speaking in the Dail this afternoon when he said: “It is far too soon for people to book their holidays yet, but summer is far from lost.”

And he said that international air travel will resume soon, with this only being “weeks away”.
