Coronavirus Ireland update as worrying new 'Lambda' variant announced

Health authorities have confirmed a further 534 cases of COVID in Ireland today.

17 people who are COVID positive are in ICU.

A total of 58 patients with COVID-19 are currently in hospitals across the country.

The latest figures were announced by the Department of Health this evening.

The World Health Organisation has flagged the latest variant of Covid-19 as a ‘variant of concern’.

The Lambda variant first appeared first appeared in South America in August last year and is now accounting for over 80% of new cases in some countries.

It has been found in at least 27 countries, including England.

The main symptoms of the Lambda variant include continuous cough, high temperature and a change or loss to your smell or taste.

The Delta variant continues to dominate across Europe. It now accounts for over 70% of new cases reported in Ireland.
