Coronavirus Ireland update as new proposal could see major change in vaccine roll out

People could be vaccinated on the basis of their age under a new proposal being considered for the National Vaccination Programme.

The proposal for a major change in the vaccine allocation programme being discussed by the Cabinet could see the current plan of people getting the jab based on the age and work being dropped.

But this new framework will not come into place until everyone aged 70 and above, vulnerable people, and those with underlying conditions are vaccinated.

The move is being proposed to cabinet today and would mean that groups 10-15 on the rollout list would be scrapped, instead, the remaining adults will receive their appointment based on their age, the Irish Independent reports.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin will address the nation this evening where he will announce what changes will be made to Ireland's lockdown restrictions from April 5.

Changes are expected to be minimal and will be introduced on a phased basis after NPHET delivered what was described as a "grim" presentation to the Cabinet sub-committee on COVID-19 last night.

The medical experts told Ministers that any easing of restrictions over the next four to eight weeks could have a dire impact on the health services with cases of the virus remaining stubbornly high.

Despite this warning, there is likely to be some changes announced which will be introduced on a phased basis.

These changes include lifting the five-kilometre travel limits, an increase in the number of households that can meet outdoors, a return to sports for children and a return to work for builders.
