Coronavirus Ireland update as 592 new cases and 10 further deaths announced

There have been 592 new cases of COVID-19 announced in Ireland, along with 10 further related deaths.

The latest figures were announced by NPHET today at a briefing in the Department of Health.

Of the cases notified today:

  • 299 are men / 288 are women
  • 72% are under 45 years of age
  • The median age is 32 years old
  • 253 in Dublin, 52 in Kildare, 35 in Donegal, 33 in Meath, 28 in Galway and the remaining 191 cases are spread across all other counties.

As of 8am today, 359 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 87 are in ICU. 32 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

As of March 8, 536,617 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Ireland:

  • 382,528 people have received their first dose
  • 154,089 people have received their second dose

The update comes hours after a fourth vaccine was approved for use in Europe, the single shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

But the majority of the 600,000 doses earmarked for Ireland will not arrive into the country until June.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar also dealt a major blow to hairdressers, barbers and non-essential retail today.

He said that it is unlikely they will be opening before May, with the April 5 lockdown easing intended for outdoor activities and construction.
