Coronavirus Ireland: Top Dublin stylist gives lockdown advice and tips on haircuts, extensions and dyeing hair at home

A popular Dublin hairstylist has given his top tips for those interested in doing a bit of hair DIY during the coronavirus lockdown.

Senior hairstylist with Roller Blow Bar, Gary Moore, decided to share some insights and tricks of the hair trade for those who missed the boat and didn't get a chop before their favourite barbers and hairdressers shut up shop.

Making the hairstyles from home look and sound easy, Gary admitted that he had just fixed up his own hair two days ago.

He joked: "It'll do until the barber reopens" when speaking to Rebecca and Brendan on 98FM's Big Breakfast adding that it took him an hour to do a fade on his own head with the help of three mirrors.

He was also on hand to answer some questions from hairy listeners who were keen to sort out their weave before it needed its own planning permission.

Here's some questions and answers on all things from hiding grey hairs to dos but mostly don'ts about fresh fades at home:

Q: I have long hair, with a few split ends, do I cut it myself or get someone else too?

A: "If it's more just for a bit of shape around the front. Do it dry, split it down the middle and then bring each side to the front with your hands.

"Chip into the ends rather than taking a big chunk off it if you know what I mean. If you're looking to take length off it, bring it back and have it down your back but let someone else do it - preferably wet,

"Have it straight down and try and cut it across, little snips rather than big ones to make sure you're not cutting absolute chunks out of it.

Q: What about for the fellas handing over the razor to the other half or a family member, what's the tip about taking the razor to somebody's head when you've never done it before?

A: "To be honest, do something basic. Don't go in and try a fade at home because it won't end well.

"A little trim with a razor just going around the hairline will sharpen and freshen it up as it is."

Q: How do you get hair extensions out?

A: They've been put in professionally and I would recommend getting them taken out professionally. Don't go near it yourself.

Q: Any advice for people who are dyeing their own hair at the minute?

A: "As a professional, we never recommend to dye your hair at home yourself. Box dyes have uncontrolled amounts of ammonia in them. You can end up breaking your hair or turning it a colour you didn't expect it to. You just don't know what sort of way it's going to lift.

"But, if you're looking to cover greys, what we recommend is those root touch up sprays that you can buy in the chemist.

"Or, if you've got dark hair, a great way to cover greys is mascara or by using an eyebrow pencil."
