Coronavirus Ireland: Tony Holohan warns 'do not go into work' as over 630 COVID patients in Dublin hospitals

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has warned people to "not go into work" and continue working from home as the situation in Ireland's hospitals remains "stark".

As of 8pm last night, 1,982 COVID-19 patients were hospitalised across the country, with 630 of those in Dublin hospitals.

There were 135 in St Vincent's, 110 in St James's, 108 in Tallaght, 102 in Beaumont, 94 in Connolly, 78 in the Mater, two in CHI Crumlin and one in CHI Tallaght.

Last night there were only five adult ICU beds available across Dublin hospitals - two in the Mater and Connolly and one in St Vincent's. Of the 299 occupied ICU beds, 193 people with COVID-19 were occupying them in Ireland.

Yesterday a further 2,944 cases of the coronavirus were announced of which 1,065 were in Dublin, along with 13 additional deaths which all occurred in January.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health said: “The situation in our hospitals is stark. We are seeing people of all ages being admitted to hospital and being taken into intensive care units.

"The levels of infection are such that your chances of transmitting or getting COVID-19 are very high, and we know that a proportion of those cases will lead to serious illness and mortality. There is no group who should feel the public health advice does not apply to them.

"It is only if we act together that we can keep ourselves, our loved ones, and health and social care facilities safe.

“As we look forward to the week ahead, consider your choices and make the right ones. Do not go into work tomorrow if you can work from home. If you are an employer, facilitate remote working for your employees.”
