Coronavirus: Ireland to clap for healthcare workers in show of unity at 8pm

The Dail is to come to a halt at 8pm this evening as people around the country applaud Ireland's healthcare workers.

In an amazing initiative, which is also happening in the UK at the same time, thousands of people across the country will unite to thank those on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The campaign picked up steam across social media, and is now going to be celebrated by Government officials.

Many people will take to their gardens, front doors, windows and living rooms across Ireland to show their appreciation while practising social distancing guidelines.

TDs are expected to sit until at least 11pm this evening as part of a bumper 12-hour session to push through emergency coronavirus legislation.

Some of the legislation being pushed through include the subsidy wage scheme and plans for temporary morgues for the rising number of deaths from COVID-19.
